Easy Summer Home Makeover Ideas

Looking for simple ways to welcome the summer season into your home? Here are some easy-to-do summer decorating ideas from seven top designers.

1. Try Stylish, Retro-Style Fans

They'll save on air conditioning bills and add a little retro chic style to your home. "I pull out the many vintage fans I've bought over the years. They also make a lot of noise, but it's very rhythmic, which I find soothing," says John Danzer.

3. Highlight Summer Colors and Scents

There's no need to spend a ton of money on brand-new accessories. Instead, makeover your kitchen with splashes of color right from the garden. Designer Christina Sullivan says, "I like the clean aromatic scent of garden tomatoes in the kitchen. I pick a portion of the vine and place it in a simple white bowl on the kitchen counter. The deep cardinal red of the tomato against the fern green vines adds an amazing contrast in the white bowl. It not only smells fragrant but looks divine - and then you can eat it!"

4. Plant Fresh Herbs

Rather then buying fresh herbs at the grocery store, designer Clodagh recommends potted ones. They'll last much longer and smell divine.
"I buy plants and fill my window boxes. I plant two with especially fragrant herbs. When the breeze blows over them, the house is filled with scent," she says.

5. Remove the Rugs

Designer Jenny Armit recommends rolling up those heavy rugs and stashing them away until cooler weather hits. "I take all the rugs out of the house and just have the bare polished concrete floors," she says. The look is simple and clean -- and makes cleaning easier, too!

6. Relax and Have Fun

You don't have to overhaul your home to make the most of the season. Remember to relax and enjoy it. "I don't redecorate, but I always have more flowers, bring out different linens for entertaining, and stock the wine fridge with my favorite white wines, " says Jay Jeffers. "Even the music I play has a little more pep in its step. Summer is a playful season, and it's fun for a home to reflect that in spirit."
