Green Ways to Recreate Your Wardrobe

Written By Madiha Boolani

Too many old jeans taking up all you closet space? Tired of wearing the same old shirt again and again? Living on a limited budget? Here is the solution to all your problems! Clean out your closet, get a pair of scissors handy and get ready to let your imagination run wild!

1. Dye your tank tops or faded t-shirts to coordinate with your existing wardrobe. You can also tie dye them to get funky new t-shirts.

2. Make a scooped, square or v-shaped neckline at the front of a top with a different neckline at the back. Add in lace or sequins to brighten up the neckline.

3. Create an opening at the front or back of a top. Add an interfaced strip of fabric to create a buttoned or laced closure.

4. Cut the logo of a shirt you love and couldn't part with and apply it onto a simple basic shirt.

5. Design a new skirt by cutting off an over-sized shirt right underneath the armpit. Fold the top part inward and hem it. You might need to sew it tighter or add elastic band at the top.

6. Create an opening on a skirt. Add an interfaced strip of fabric to create a buttoned or laced closure.

7. Wear an open skirt over another.

8. Change a gathered skirt to a wrap-around skirt. Add a new waistband and ties.

9. Add lace or a contrasting fabric ruffle along the opening of a skirt

10. Create a new purse or backpack from a skirt or an old pair of jeans. Simply cut them straight and stitch the end, using excess fabric to make purse handles.

11. Use an old tank-top as a cute handbag by just sewing up the bottom.

12. Take a scarf that you don't wear often and fold it into a triangle, then tie the two sides of the top of the triangle around your neck, tie the tail ends around your waist. You have a halter fitted shirt!

13. Wear you scarf as a tube top. Simply fold 2 opposite corners into the center, so that the corners touch the center of the scarf, then tie it around yourself with the folded edges on top and bottom

14. A summer favourite is to wear a scarf as a cowl halter. To get this look simply tie two adjacent corners of the scarf together, put our head through it and tie the other two corners around your waist - and there you have it

15. Another way to wear a large square scarf is as a bandeau. Fold in two opposite corners of the scarf into the center until you get a long strip of fabric that is not too wide, but not too thin either! Next simply tie the long strip around yourself tufting the ends a bit so it looks like you have a bow in front.

16. Take off laces from old t-shirts and sew them across a new one.

17. Add dangling beads, ruffles or feathers to accentuate old clothing.

18. Take a dress shirt from your dad. Dart the body of the shirt so it doesn't look too big for you. Roll up the sleeves to make them three quarters. Wear a big bright belt across your waist. Pair up the ensemble with leggings and you have a sweater dress!

19. Sew in sequins on to blazer pockets or bright colored buttons on plain t-shirts to give them a new look

If you simply are not that creative make sure to recycle your clothes!
