Survey says the best place to live is...

REUTERS/Lisi NiesnerVIENNA (Reuters) - Vienna's excellent infrastructure, safe streets and good public health service make it the nicest place to live in the world, consulting group Mercer said in a global survey which put Baghdad firmly in last place.

German and Swiss cities also performed especially well in the quality of living rankings, with Zurich, Munich, Duesseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva and Bern in the top 10.

The Austrian capital, with its ornate buildings, public parks and extensive bicycle network recently reduced the cost of its annual public transport ticket to 1 euro a day.

Serious crime is rare and the city of around 1.7 million inhabitants regularly tops global quality of life surveys.

But Mercer warned that top-ranking European cities could not take their position for granted in the survey, which assessed more than 200 cities.

"They are not immune to any decrease of living standards should this (economic) turmoil persist," Mercer's senior researcher Slagin Parakatil said on the company's website.

Mercer, which also ranked cities according to personal safety, gave Athens a poor score because of clashes between demonstrators and police and political instability.

"In 2011 Athens is ranked in Europe among the lowest in the personal safety ranking," Parakatil said.

Oslo also fell to 24th place in the separate safety survey because of Anders Breivik's mass killings in July. It would usually be in the top 15, Mercer said.

Baghdad's political turmoil, poor security enforcement and attacks on local people and foreigners made it the worst place to live in 2011, both in terms of life quality and safety, Mercer said.

Political and economic unrest in Africa and the Middle East also pushed down scores in those regions.

"Many countries such as Libya, Egypt, Tunisia and Yemen have seen their quality of living levels drop considerably," Parakatil said.

"Political and economic reconstruction in these countries, combined with funding to serve basic human needs, will undoubtedly boost the region."

He said that while the outlook is uncertain for most of the world because of economic and political turmoil, cities in Asia-Pacific look set to benefit thanks to political stability and solid growth.

Auckland, Sydney, Wellington, Melbourne and Perth made it into the top 20 for quality of life in 2011 while Singapore was the highest-ranking Asian city in 25th place.

Top 10 in Mercer Quality of Living survey

    1 Vienna Austria

    5 Duesseldorf Germany

    5 Vancouver Canada

Lot's of places are good to live in besides the USA. I'm an American in China and I find it a great place to live. No where near as much crime and people are nicer, it's great. However the USA is still a good country with it's pros and cons as any other country has and would be better if we stopped spending the money that other countries loan us on "defense" which is in no way "defending America".

Stop the immigration, get rid of the lobbyists and make your representatives accountable. This will restore our country to greatness again.

Let's be honest here...those places don't have large numbers of blacks and other minorities. Of course Americans don't have a sense of "community", if your neighbors are a bunch of fresh off the boat foreigners or violent blacks, it's not like you're gonna throw a potluck or invite them over to hang out. Not saying they are bad, you just don't have anything in common with them. Now, if you can find some non-violent blacks to chill with you will likely have the time of your life and make pretty decent friends, but you always have to worry about "offending" them and in my many many years around black people, let me say that you never know what they will take offense to, and when they get mad, they will call all their friends and make your life miserable. Who wants to hang out with people they have to worry about offending, and then getting shot or stabbed over it?

Honestly, the problem with America is the Jews. They're always poisoning the well. Americans can't have the type of neighborhoods they want because some Jew will screech about "discrimination" despite the fact that THEY keep THEIR neighborhoods almost 100% Jewish and do not race mix. Also they are the ones behind the "grievance industry" of minorities demanding handouts and calling everyone racists, who wants to be around that? Not because of racism but because nobody wants to have to relentlessly police themselves and be scared of the PC fascists...all while hearing the vilest anti-white rhetoric from the (wholly Jewish controlled) media egging everyone on. Basically, people want to be left alone and make their own friends but when you have to be a phony and are terrified of being labeled a "racist" or un-PC (accusations that can ruin people's lives even if not true) you're not going to run out and make new friends or be a member of the "community". Especially if you're even slightly different from the mainstream....

The main reason Europe is a better place to live than the US is they don't have Jersey Shore.

In America we no longer have a sense of community. It is every man for himself. Or we belong to a certain group. Such as African American, Mexican American, Tea Party etc. No longer a sense of being an American. Our educational system is struggling. Our cities are becoming run down. America's roads, bridges and infrastructure is starting to crumble. Selfishness and greed is causing the collapse this once great nation.

These cities are primarily in countries that are social democracies. They have a far higher tax burden than in the USA and they spend their resources on things like education, health-care and infrastructure maintenance and modernization..

I lived in France for awhile and must say it was amazing. The people are wonderful. I hate to say it as an American, but Europe has a much higher quality of life. There is not as much materialism, and the the people have a sense of community. People there slow down and appreciate the small things.

Much of the problem is Civil Society in the United States has declined. The false belief plased upon the self made man has led to the thinking "look after self" people will steal, cheat and lie to acquire what they want. Value is placed upon things not people. Self satisfaction has taken precedence over self sacrifice for the whole.

I am from Brazil and I know Europe very well, my first husband was German and I can say that's country I know the best. Once I forgot my purse in a bench in a stop of a public transportation and 2 hours later going back, like just in case, there was an old lady keeping the purse to me, other time lost in a city I didn't know well, I asked direction from a man who was washing his car, as I couldn't understand what he said he simple drove myself and my kids to the direction I was suppose to go. Things like this happens by hundreds. The people are very nice and the country is wonderful ....BUT I WOULDN'T CHANGE THE USA for no other country, not even my Brazil. The USA is the best place to live in the world!

After living in Europe, the most notable thing upon my return to the USA was/is...No culture (and if not shameful already, lessening each day), no sense and ignorance of history and less educated generation. Not to mention, NOT A CLUE ABOUT ITS GOVERNMENT/ corrupted officials DOINGS and insatiable greed . Oh!! and...Junk food fat. And that is just a small sample of what is the comparative perception of Europeans. Not something to be proud of. It is what it is.

America is on the decline. I’ve read that in proportion to population, more Americans are living in poverty then Chinese in China. Our health care is unaffordable. We have social problems born from intense poverty and growing homelessness. Our political system has collapsed. America has become a nightmare. Why has this happened? It took decades of outsoaring jobs/prosperity to accomplish this. We favored the welfare of the very few over the good of the many. American voters chose this destiny; nobody forced it on us.
    • GWB  •  2 months ago
Well I've hit 4 of the cities and yes they're all very nice. Folks we wil more then likely never have something like this in the US. There simply is not the collective political or social will to have it. The bottom line my fellow Americans is that you don't want cities or countries like this what you want are cities like Detriot, like Flint , like L.A, (world largest experiment in urban sprawl) etc... and country like Mexico, Iran, North Korea, or China etc... Right now you have exactly what you wanted a country that was great and is now only pretending to be. If we want something different if you think that we're good , but could be better then we'll need to work for it. Together!!
