Five ways to accentuate your curves

We’re happy to say that these days the fashion world seems to be embracing girls with curves—otherwise known as real women!—and the options for flaunting your shape— in a stylish, flattering way, of course — have never been better. You always hear us talk about maximizing your assets, but what does that mean you should do when you open your closet? In this episode celebrity style expert and body-shape guru Jacqui Stafford runs down her tips for enhancing an hourglass look and creating the illusion of one!

It’s amazing how much of a difference a few small adjustments can make. Here are five dressing tips that will dramatically improve your look:

    Don’t hide! Emphasize

The worst thing you can do is wear big, baggy, shapeless clothing which, as Jacqui says, will only make you look “big, baggy, and shapeless!” That doesn’t mean wear everything skin-tight. Somewhere in the middle is the ideal. Go for cuts that show off your shape in flattering ways.

    Pay attention to proportion

Cuts that broaden the width of the shoulders—say, a structured shirt or a blazer— create the illusion of a tiny waist.

    Highlight your waistline

Creating a visual break at your natural waist—your narrowest point—is another way to emphasize a curvy figure. Pairing a solid top that you can tuck into a flared skirt helps create an hourglass effect.

    Belts are key

Again, this is all about defining your waistline. Belts are simply another great tool. You don’t want a skinny belt or one that’s too thick. Look for a midwidth option.

    Find a bra that fits

This one sounds obvious but it’s amazing how many of us walk around wearing a bra that doesn’t fit. A bra that’s supportive, shapely, and slimming can be transforming if you’re wearing a one-piece look like a sweater dress. An ill-fitting bra can make you look squat and create dreaded back bulges.

Curves have not gone out of fashion but don't confuse fat or obesity with curves. Real women come in all shapes and sizes. Just b/c she is thin doesn't make her any less real and I have to say I rather be thin than fat any day. I'm thin by nature and at least I don't have to worry about diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol problems, joint problems and everything else that comes with being fat.

well u can still have diabetes if its in your genes. you can still get heart disease as well even if you are skinny. you can still have joint problems even if you are skinny. and you can still get sick even if your not fat. just saying.

There are just different types of women. They are all REAL. Some look like teenage boys, others have more curves than a mountain highway. Genetics determine that. Only difference is whether they are underweight, overweight or an appropriate weight for their build and age.

If so many women want curves, why don't they make clothes for those of us who actually HAVE curves? If it is the "ideal" then why are all the clothes made for people who have no waist or no boobs or no hips/butt? I don't understand it. Pants always gap open at my waist if they fit my hips. Shirts that flatter my waist and the rest of my torso pull at my boobs. I get so fed up sometimes...

You are asking for talor made - that is expensive - you know who makes clothing by the million for walmart - shapeless orientals.
      • ms. sheshe 6 months ago
Try PZI jeans/clothing line. I swear, you'll be pleased!
      • starbrite 6 months ago
Those "shapeless orientals" are probably working 12-hour days in sweatshops just sewing the clothes - you may want to check with the corporate offices of Walmart to find out who really designs those shapeless outfits. Also, we don't refer to ourselves as oriental anymore - that's reserved for rugs and antiques.

Yeah, a boxy red t-shirt accentuates all your feminine curves. Not.

how a bout a wife beater curlers and a dressing gown
      • stward101 7 months ago
Wear a boxy tee shirt and to-the-waist pants and you'll look like you have no waist at all.
      • Laura 7 months ago
I thought that was the point. The baggy red t-shirt was the "do not wear this" illustration, right?

It doesnt matter how or what I wear anymore. live in small town with walmart for main store. Any cloths over size 14 looks like mu mu's . They make my size 18 with big ugly prints. Hard to find anything besides what looks like my great gramas curtains.

Find a CATO!!! They have everything that Jr/Ms has! You'll love it and it's over priced. Who's the guy above calling a pig??? He's such a catch with all that charm! EW! Love who you are! You're body is YOUR temple no one else has a right to judge. And if they do judge... it's because they themselves are never going to be what they want to be. It's easier to put others down and make yourself feel better then to accept you have issues with acceptance!

WHOOPS!!! NOT over priced! My bad.

When the stylist herself looks like she's wearing a colorful garbage bag...I would think twice about the advice she's giving.
    • kkaty_98@yahoo.com  •  6 months ago
No plus size models for illustration...makes the advice a little suspect as well

I think it is funny, they say curvy women are in style, yet they do not make clothes to fit these curvy women. women's jeans are made to fit women shaped like an upside down egg with a flat butt. also, what is with the huge gap that forms in the back of the waist on most pants when a woman that has a butt that is round? it is like they have to get pants in bigger sizes to fit across their hips, but when they do that, the waist is huge and does not fit.

Ladies you're all beautiful. Just accentuate who you are. Eat when your hungry, where what you feel confident in.
    • Sweetie  •  6 months ago
I know all those hate comments on here. Real women dont need to have big curves but real women should have respect for themselves and others. I myself have curves but i dont dis skinny women for not having curves. Curves are not needed to be a real woman. if you have curves dont disrespect skinny women. if you dont have curves dont disrespect "big" women by saying " they are fat and those are flabs not curves".
    • Alvin  •  7 months ago
The curvy "girl" never left...This obsession with large breasted women with the behind of an adolescent boy is a plague upon both women and men...
    • samantha  •  7 months ago
I hate that they define "real woman" as curvy. Ms. Bernard, your so ignorant for writing such things. A "real woman" should be defined by her character. Not by the way she looks!!
    • Deanna  •  7 months ago
I have a big butt and hips and they are curvy by nature .Fat is fat and when I was 40 pounds overweight I was not curvy because there was no definition in my waist at all.
    • Gail  •  7 months ago
"as long as I have waist smaller than my butt and my chest, I am good".....LOLOLOLOL !!!!!!!

      WELL SAID ! ! ! !......... : o D

I am not by any means a skinny miss but neither am I a curvacious babe. I have wide shoulders and my only curves are attributed to my bust line. I am not fat. I wear anything between sizes 12-14. What the fashion industry needs to do is standardize sizes so that EVERY woman can walk into a store and confidantly find the right size clothing! Once they do this womens' body confidence will surely grow.
    • auBuRNSKYe  •  7 months ago
I really don't like when people say that "real women have curves" some real women have fast metabolisms.
    • contractor girl  •  6 months ago
Never could understand women trying to hide their curves. I have a curvacious figure and I work hard to keep it in shape. It's not easy, as anyone will tell you. It's worth it when once in awhile a man will turn around and look at my curves. Inspires me to dress nicely and keep goin' to the gym. I think the fashion tips are sound for us curvy girls.
