According to a report published in the most recent Journal of Sexual Medicine, a 21-year-old Iranian man experienced a permanent semi-rigid erection after having the bright idea of inking the Persian "borow be salaamat" ("good luck with your journeys") onto his John Thomas. He also had the letter "M," his girlfriend's first initial, tattooed on his glans.

His physicians determined that his condition was not a result of tattooing per se, but caused by the traditional method used in which the artist employs a hand held needle. The process, which created internal fissures, led to non-ischemic priapism-a condition that occurs when excess blood is unable to flow out of the penis.

It is recommended that men seek medical treatment if they experience an erection for more than four hours. Other causes of prolonged erection, or priapism, include diseases such as sickle cell anemia and certain medications and illicit drugs.

After unsuccessfully having his doctors attempt to drain his penis with a shunt, the patient rejected further medical intervention. According to the report, "Because of the painless nature of erections, moderately good preservation of erectile function during intercourse, and disappointment with former surgery, the patient declined further therapies, and he lives with his condition."

The report added, "Considering this case, we discourage penile tattooing."
