'What’s Your Nude' Campaign Calls for Bras of All Skin Tones

If you're not a woman with light skin you've probably noticed that finding a "nude" bra that matches your skin tone is a difficult task. While some mass chains and brands like Target, Kmart, and WonderBra do offer brown bras, for many stores their only flesh-tone options are pale pink or tan shades that certainly won't work for the entire population.

A new Facebook campaign called "What's Your Nude?" is unifying women who are tired of the lack of diversity in bra manufacturing and urging them to contact retailers and request representation for all skin tones in the marketplace. African-American psychologist and consumer Tara Raines started the campaign after years of frustrated lingerie shopping. She recently discovered her friends and family have been dyeing beige bras at home to create darker colors that match their skin.

The The "I don't think it's too much to ask that bra makers include darker hues when manufacturing their collections," Raines said in a press release. "Women of color deserve to look and feel sexy, and a big part of that is looking like ourselves."

Raines also noted that manufacturers willing to take on this unrepresented portion of the market would be very successful. "Women of color have tremendous spending power in the U.S. and it's absurd to think that in 2012 we are essentially disenfranchised when they shop for lingerie," said Raines. "It's my hope that this campaign will drive not only awareness, but swift action by bra makers."

Has she gotten your attention? Here are a few ways you can participate in the "What's Your Nude?" campaign, which will run throughout the month of February:

    -"Like" their Facebook page, facebook.com/morebrownbras
-Follow the campaign at twitter.com/whatsyournude and spread the word by using the #WhatsYourNude hash tag
-Contact your preferred bra manufacturer or bra retailer via phone, email, social media or snail mail and let them know "nude" is not just one color

If know of any brands that carry brown bras (or any other flesh tones) let us know in the comments and we'll be sure to relay the info to Tara Raines.

It's also important to note that it's not just bras that need a serious revamp. Items like Spanx, panties, concealer, foundation, band-aids, and even heels are dubbed "nude" when they often only cater to a specific light skin tone. Let's hope the fashion and beauty industries take notice and continue to diversify! We're sending major props and high-fives to Tara Raines for kick-starting this campaign. Watch her discuss the "What's Your Nude" campaign in the clip below.

So, I guess the real issue at hand here is exclusion. I do think it's stupid to refer to one color as nude. Maybe years ago it was difficult to come across brown undies. Maybe they are still a bit scarce, but you may have to buy them online if the big box store doesn't have them. I could have sworn I've seen medium brown bras. But I'm not sure, although I'm black, my skin tone ranges from a tan/beige to what I consider dark brown. I have no trouble finding nude undies or shoes. I could care less if they are called cognac, caramel, or nude. It's very obvious from beauty products that white is the norm and all else is an after thought. So brown isn't mainstream, that's okay. The hipster in me prefers it this way. It would be nice to find browner bandages though. I'm an avid online shopper, something tells me I could even find those online. And while were at it, has anyone ever noticed at makeup counters that a white woman with brown hair is typically considered medium skin? In what world is that medium? Oh, I know a white one! J/K :p Everyone else was an afterthought. Instead of complaining take advantage of this niche, come up with your own brand or support those who want your business. I hardly think this "nude" business is racist, maybe clueless is a better word. I'm not offended.

Lots of women talking about get over it, get over it. Clearly a lot of you aren't business oriented. If you have people willing to buy a product why not manufacture it? If this isn't a problem for you pat yourself on the back and then get OVER yourself and stop wasting your time commenting.

I am a women a color and I have never felt diminished when a department store did not have shade. Honestly that's not what I'm looking for in bra. When you go bra shopping you be looking for how well it supports and holds, not that the color does not match your skin. As long as you cant see it when I'm wearing a light shirt who cares? But that's just my opinion

The benefit of having a skin tone bra is that it doesn't show under thinner or lighter color fabrics. I'm a lighter skined person and I never wear white bras since it's always shows up under my clothes. That being said, I think making various skin-toned bra probably isn't worth it for most bra companies. I think that is why I see a lot of comments below indicating that the nude bras don't match a lot of light people either. They typically make them more mid-toned so that it works for more people and helps their sales.

I dont see the point of this. Why would you need a skin tone bra? Its going to be covered by your shirt/dress (hopefully) anyways. If your wearing strapless type of shirt or dress then wear strapless bra/clear straps.

They don't make nude bras for very pale women either. My choice is either white or something several shades darker than I am. It really doesn't matter that much though because I usually don't have my bra on display.

Interesting! I always thought this about Band-Aids, but didn't think about bras.

I am a fair skinned woman and I can't find a "nude" bra that matches either. It is always either too light or too dark. You need to be realistic that this will never happen and we all need to stop buying shirts that are too sheer or wear a tank top under it.

I never found nude underwear sexy or cute to begin with, so there isn't much need to advocate it.
Personally, I prefer black undies, as it's easier to conceal than most types of underwear.
But I do kind of agree with darker foundation/concealers, though.
It's really hard to find them in most areas.

If I have a pair a white pants that can get a bit transparent outside, should I go for a white thong or a nude thong?

Victoria Secret makes a brown bra, but it's usually one of the first ones to sell out. It would be wonderful to have "nude" items in different hues. Not asking that nude come in every skin tone, but when nude looks off-white, who is it really for? Never met anyone that shade. Shoes, underwear, Spanx, etc. Bring on the different hues!!!

I work at Marshalls and while I haven't noticed a *huge* selection of darker nude bras, I seem to get at least one every day that I work there. The store is located in a city with large Hispanic and Haitian populations so that could be a contributing factor. On a side note, I have very pasty skin and thus far I've found one bra that matches my skin tone: it was Lily of France.

That is really a shame! I'm a white woman, but I've noticed the lack of darker "nude" shades myself. It really is appalling to think that manufacturers and stores can be so short sighted.
I am pretty sure I've seen Playtex having the darker brown shades, I think I've seen them at an outlet mall. But seriously, Playtex is not exactly the cutest stuff out there, more functional than anything else.

Imagine the price increase for a bra if manufactures had to cater to every.single.skin.color?..I'm all for diversity but you shouldn't be yelling at Target or other retailers...it's the brands they carry and what colors those brands have to offer. The color Nude is one of the hardest colors to regulate(keep a consistent dye color) in fabric dyes and it's not cheap. Most brands offer brown, nude, black & white as basic colors. This is what sells...and when did a nude bra become sexy? Last I heard, generally, men prefer any other color than nude.

i'm a fair skinned black woman and lol, the nude shade actually matches my skin tone! i've never really considered it beneficial because i keep my bra covered and tend to wear black or white bras. i can see how it could be beneficial if you were wearing something sheer, but isn't that what camis are for?

Im am extremely fair and the "nude" color bras never match my skin tone either.....I would like to find one semi close to my skin but as someone else noted it is unrealistic. GET OVER IT.

Except...they're missing the facts. 'Nude' is NOT supposed to mean 'matching fleshtones.' Sorry, but they're just flat-out wrong on this. 'Nude' means it's a color that is designed to not be seen under lighter clothes. It's not 'naked flesh,' it's 'not visible under white' and yes, it works on lighter and darker skin tones. I agree there should be more 'flesh' options also, but it's not the same thing.

HOw are nude bras sexy? Only old grandmas wear those colors. I always wear obnoxious colors like hot pink and blue. They're so much hotter.
