Celebrity-inspired tips for dressing your body

One of the things that sets stars apart style-wise is that, thanks to advice from experts and years of trial and error, they know how to dress for their bodies. They know which silhouettes, hem-lengths, and trends look best on them and, more importantly, which ones they should avoid at all costs. So why not take advantage of their expertise? Pick a celebrity whose body type is similar to yours, and let her wardrobe choices help guide you. In this episode, we show you how Sofia Vergara, Kate Middleton, Beyoncé, Melissa McCarthy and Carrie Underwood play up their assets and how you can, too.

    Sofia Vergara

    Body type: Curvy

You’ll never see Sofia in a chunky sweater or shapeless pants. She is all about wearing fabrics with stretch that hug her curves in the right places. She also knows how to work with proportions so she can show off her assets without looking trashy. If something’s cut low, she balances it with a longer hemline.

    Kate Middleton

    Body type: Tall and thin

If you have a straight-up-and-down shape like Kate's, create the illusion of curves with flirty, feminine A-line dresses. The suggestion of an hourglass shape can be made very successfully by choosing a dress with strong shoulders and a belt or ribbon detailing at the waist.

    Beyoncé

Body type: Bigger on the bottom

At the moment, Queen B’s shape is in flux -- she’s expecting a baby in February. But the mom-to-be is naturally a bit larger on the bottom than the top. If you check out her pre-baby wardrobe, you can see that she deftly chooses pieces with a lot going on up top; embellishment or a deep v-neck will help draw the eye upwards.

    Melissa McCarthy

    Body type: Plus-size

Melissa is so attuned to what looks best for her shape that she’s designing her own line of plus-size clothing. Most often she chooses monochromatic pieces with flattering ¾ or full-length sleeves in classic cuts, adding a standout accessory or hairstyle for punctuation.

    Carrie Underwood

    Body type: Petite

You might have the impression that Carrie’s legs are a mile long but the songstress is barely 5’3.” She smartly chooses mini-dresses to show off her toned gams and if she does go for a dramatic gown, she’ll make sure it’s in a solid color for maximum elongating.

Why is it women are always more hard on women? I mean seriously, we're all unique and we're all different colors/sizes & personalities. I am short 5' 2' and just lost over 40 lbs. I couldn't help how women stared at me and how uncomfortable I felt around them. Men, I didn't feel the same. I felt more relaxed and myself more than anything. Now that I've lost the weight, all I hear from strangers is when they see me with my daughter is are you sisters or cousins? I can't tell you just how wonderful that makes me feel but I wish women weren't so Damned hard on each other just because... Especially when commenting about stars or singers anyone famous. These folks are still human like us - have some respect.

Fact of life - all women are in competition with each other. Guys only compete for fun, like in sports or cars they drive -

us women are our own worst enemies, that is why you will never see a women president!

        @ Dana: agreed!
        @ Chris: huh?

Everybody with eyes knows that McCarthy is a heavy type woman. The difference is that she carries herself in a manner that it's not an issue....I would rather spend an evening with her instead of an evening with a hot chick with no sense of humor. Looks are everything....the difference is, sweetness and kindness are the 'looks' that most of us would like to deal with instead of the typical hot chicks with nothing else to offer.

How is it not an issue when you are morbidly obese? Its definately not healthy, she is a beautiful woman but still needs to lose a few pounds, I know I will get alot of thumbs down cause America is in denial about the obesity epidemic

Mitch: You are not a typical male in the US. Looks are everything to a typical male.

Also, wide leg pants and slimmer fitting tops are great together (as long as the top is flattering).
      • Erika 6 months ago
Linda, you could probably wear shorter skirts to show off those legs. Your blouses should be longer, where they hit at mid-hip to bring attention down and that will also help elongate the look of your torso, choose blouses with ruching along the sides, and steer clear of jersey-type or other clingy fabrics. Hope that helps!

OMG seriously, they are acting as If Beyonce is abnormally big on the bottom or something. She looks proportionate to me..She has an hour glass figure. We don't all go straight down from head to toe, and that's NOT a bad thing...
      • Tamie 6 months ago
It's ridiculous. If your past 30 you may as well be dead as far as the fashion industry is concerned.

Hello! Glad somebody said it. I'm 42 with a curvy figure...though i don't look 42, I wish someone would make clothes for us Mature Women....Old is a state of mind.
      • Joy 6 months ago
No, Beyonce does NOT have "hips & butt." It's called, PADDING. Pay close attention...some pics you see she's considered thick, and then there are the ones that look like she lost weight in a matter of days. She wears pads, and it's been proven.

Okay thanks for not showing anyone who is overweight and SHORT. I'm short and plus size and CANNOT wear the same thing as Melissa McCarthy.
      • Tammy 6 months ago
sure you can, get it altered.
      • Erika 6 months ago
I agree, but there's an easy fix. Instead of long skirts, try shorter ones, ones that hit at the knee or slightly above the knee, fitted empire waists are also good for bringing attention up, away from problem areas. V-necks also make our necks and faces look slimmer. 3/4 sleeves are great, they hide the parts of the arms we want to hide. Hope this helps!

Melissa McCarthy is only 5'2" so I would call that short.

Every single time I watch The Thread, I read the most horrific, negative comments. What's wrong with you all? People that always have to put another person down to raise themselves up have a big problem. Get over yourselves. No one is better than another person, no matter what you believe.

All the women in the video are beautiful, no matter their size. Beauty is something that comes from within. Beauty isn't only about what's on the outside, and those who think that have a problem.

I think Sofia always looks awesome... and she is not a tiny woman. It's nice that she isn't ashamed of her curves and wears things that show them off!
    • CharlesS  •  6 months ago
you should be thankful you have clothes at all. Where do these shallow minded people come from?

there will always be random meaningless people who are such cowards with no life, they can hide behind a computer and put people down.they may not like my comment but they have 2 choices .like it or not...thats all
    • Alicia  •  6 months ago
Sarah Bernard, I will never listen to you again. Yes I said it. You put the one bottom heavy person on here in a #$%$ BEDAZZLED POTATO SACK. You are no longer allowed to give advice on clothing for bottom heavy women. FAIL!
    • margo  •  6 months ago
All of the women dress well. Sofia Vergara however, struck me in the most positive way.
    • BeautifullyMe  •  6 months ago
Staying on topic with the article, I think that the tips were great, and they're easy to follow! I can't wait to see what Melissa has in-store for her clothing line!

I had no clue that Carrie Underwood was 5"3'!! lol

There are some really inappropriate comments on here about people who are not skinny. In our politically correct country where you can't have an opinion about gays, illegal aliens, etc, without being branded a "hater", it seems to be acceptable to put people down who are a certain size. Seems like discrimination and "hate" speech to me.

Everyone is different and beautiful in their own way so respect that...
    • Brittany Mays  •  6 months ago
the word " fat" is particularity over used ,and to me --an ugly word--- as long as you are healthy you are fine, and the word "beautiful"and "skinny" are too often put next to each other.
    • Rona  •  6 months ago
I dont think they do and say enough for Plus Size woman!
    • Whitney  •  6 months ago
I'm wondering when Bulimia and Anorexia became beautiful and ideal? Remember all those groups years ago who fought to prove there's more for women than motherhood and looking good?
    • hoppy  •  6 months ago
It so tiring to see women judged by their thighs etc. True beauty is within and then it is spilled out wardly. Geeze!!!!!!!!!! As long as you are comfortable who you are then who cares.
